The inspiration for Port Liberte came from Francois Spoerry, a 72 year old French architect and sailor. In 1966, Mr. Spoerry had also designed the 2000 residential unit Dutch community called Port Grimaud Resort on the Cote D’ Azur in the south of France. Mr. Spoerry had designed other successful residential sites in , California, and New Orleans . Port Liberte’ was the first time Mr. Spoerry was in a development role in the .
Port Liberte was originally financed mainly by American Investors which included the City Federal Savings and Loans of New Jersey. The Ehrenkrantz Group, a New York architectural and planning company had worked with Mr. Spoerry ironing out the details of his design. The concept focused on a city of condos, retail, office space, and recreational facilities all geared toward the water and canals within close proximity to the Statue of Liberte
The Port Liberte’ design was originated in the late 1970’s to early 1980’s. Approvals to start preparing the land to build came in the mid 1980.
